This blade was by far the largest piece I had made to date (2009). Several years ago I built a heat treating oven for sword blades, but had never had occasion to use it until this piece. \u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp align=\"left\"\u003eThis blade is forged from a 1\" round bar of 52100, and differentially tempered for a hard edge and a spring back.  The blade has a tapered tang and distal taper in the blade so it is surprisingly light and fast. In fact, this blade is a fraction of an ounce less than my personal 10\" camp knife! The blade is hand finished on the flats, and mirror polished on the tang and spine. \u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp align=\"left\"\u003eThe handle is another new adventure for me....carving. I was inspired by some heavily \"rusticated\" smoking pipes that I really liked. The desert ironwood is deeply sand blasted with a mask on the scroll area. The scroll was carved out to give it some visual depth and the perimeter is smooth and polished. \u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp align=\"left\"\u003eThe scabbard is heavy duty premium leather with an ironwood escutcheon sandblasted and finished to compliment the handle and then sewn to the sheath.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp align=\"left\"\u003eThe blade is 15.25\" long with an overall length of Chopper","description":"\u003cp\u003eA Laminated blade of 416 stainless with a 1095 core looks super cool, and is about as practical as you can get in a true cutting tool.  While the core gives all the benefits of a high carbon steel (strength, edge holding), the stainless sides add their own qualities (low maintenance, toughness) to create a package that cannot be equaled with any other method of blade construction.  The textured spine, another favorite feature, not only adds character, but shows a link to the blade's forged past.  An interesting not about the forging...  Look at the core on the tapered tang.  Look at how not only does the core taper from thick to thin along the length of the tang, but look at how perfectly centered the core is at the very end of the tang.  Now that was fun!\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eFinally, the stabilized end-grain spalted maple is my personal favorite.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eFinally, the sheath represents another of my favorite techniques - the faux inlaid sheath.  The sheath has two \"inlaid\" windows, which are actually just cut, beveled and tooled leather finished to look like a separate inlay.  Even the stitching around the windows completes the illusion.  This isn't any easier than an actual inlay, but I find it more fun to do.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eThe balance of the blade is perfect for a knife like this, and I promise you you'll get the urge to run out and cut something just from holding it!  The blade of this knife is 10.25\" long, almost 5\/16\" thick at the spine, and 15.7\" Cleaver","description":"\u003cp align=\"left\"\u003eThis, yet another high-brow work horse, is built as the ultimate chopper.  Now, a chopper is meant for chopping - not little sticks, pussy willows and daisies, but heavy wood and limbs.  The cleaver style blade puts more weight forward, and gives a longer usable cutting edge than any other blade style.  Warning: If you do not have any spare lumber or dead trees close at hand when you first hold the knife, you will likely lay into the furniture before you know what's happening.  So get the wood, get it ready, and save the kitchen table.  \u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp align=\"left\"\u003eThis blade is forged from W-2 and clay-hardened for a vivid hamon.  The spine is textured, while the rest of the blade has a fine hand-finish.  I like this look (as you probably know) because it offers such nice contrast while serving as a reminder to it's forged birth.  \u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp align=\"left\"\u003eThe bolsters are butterfly mosaic Damascus of O-1 and 15N20.  The handle scales are beautiful stabilized English walnut, secured with domed nickel silver pins and a lined lanyard hole.  \u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp align=\"left\"\u003eThe sheath is a pouch style, tooled with a quilted pattern, flanked by faux overlay of black leather.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp align=\"left\"\u003eThe blade is 10\" long, over 2\" Ox CLI","description":"\u003cp\u003eThe CLI, or Composite Laminated Integral is a Laminated steel blade with the core steel only in the blade.  The pattern of the exposed core literally shows every hammer blow required to bring the blade to the shape you see here.  Each movement of the steel distorts that core, and leaves that distortion forever in the pattern.  The blade also displays a superb version of the \"white line\" effect of my laminated steel.  There is literally not a straight line anywhere on the knife.  It is one continuous curve, in and out all the way around the piece.  The exceptionally long clip, and the very narrow \"neck\" between the handle and the blade give the blade a very lively and fast feel in the hand.  Considering how large the knife is, it almost floats on its own when you hold it.  \u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eThe handle is some beautiful Musk Ox horn with small domed nickel silver pins.  Musk Ox is one of those curiosities of nature, because a musk ox wouldn't make anyone's Top 10 list of most beautiful animals, but hidden beneath all that hair and stink is some of the most beautiful horn anywhere on earth!  It is actually translucent, so the light bounces off the patterns inside the horn, giving it a depth that very few materials can match.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eThe sheath as well, is a bit of a first.  The tooling is clean and the leather work is solid, but I wanted a little something extra to tie the whole package together.  So I forge welded a piece of laminated steel onto a section of 416 stainless bar stock, then carved it into a very unique arrowhead-shaped frog stud. \u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eThe blade of this knife is over 11\" long, and the knife is 16.5\" overall.   \u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Burt Foster Collar Hunters","description":"\u003cp\u003eThe Blue Collar hunter has for years been my basic, workhorse hunting and daily carry knife.  The size and shape of the blade and handle make it the ideal knife for hunting and camp tasks as well as the daily cardboard box or rope.  These knives are all made with my stainless \/ carbon laminated steel in a random ladder Shovelnose Camp Knife","description":"\u003cp align=\"left\"\u003eOne of the unheralded benefits of forging is the design aspect.  If I were to sit down with a blank piece of paper, I would never come up with some of the lines and shapes that I would see during the forging process.  Late last year while I was teaching a bladesmithing class, I saw ABS Mastersmith Adam DesRosiers working on a camp knife.  He wasn't finished, but I saw the line of the knife above in his partially finished knife.  The shape I saw had a recurved edge, but had a point not unlike the point of a Japanese sword.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp align=\"left\"\u003eThe blade of the knife is 1084, forged very close to shape with only the smallest amount removed near the edge to bring the blade to an edge.  The natural forging texture is visible in the dark portion at the spine.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp align=\"left\"\u003eThe handle is some very nice, hand-finished English walnut covered with a Japanese style wrap.  These handles have amazing grip, and I think work well visually as a fusion of different styles that still compliment each other nicely.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp align=\"left\"\u003eThe Camp Knife","description":"\u003cp align=\"left\"\u003eThis is a fairly unusual knife for me in a couple of ways.  t's non-traditional, but has wonderful angles and curves, not a straight line anywhere, and makes for a very powerful chopper.  The second thing, and the inspiration for the whole knife was an enormous piece of elk antler that begged to be used for something special.  \u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp align=\"left\"\u003eThe blade is forged, clay hardened 1095.  The hamon is my signature \"flocked\" pattern.  The bolster and pins are hammer-peened copper, aged just a little so that it has already begun to show some wonderful color patina.  \u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp align=\"left\"\u003eThe elk antler itself presented some interesting choices.  It had wonderful color, texture, and shape, but it is still a natural material so it was not perfectly symmetrical.  This resulted in the first knife I have ever made that actually shows a preference for a right-handed user.  There is a curve and a hollow on one side that is less present on the other, and as a right-handed user the fingers just drop into that hollow perfectly.  \u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp align=\"left\"\u003eThe sheath has a unique retaining system that prevents the knife from being drawn straight out, but requires it to be pulled to the rear before it can be drawn.  The sheath is tooled with a distressed pattern, then bordered with my campfire pattern.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp align=\"left\"\u003eBlade is 10.5\" long, nearly 2.5\" wide, and has an Tanto","description":"\u003cp\u003eThe first knife I ever made was a small chisel-point tanto, so this knife is a little bit back to my roots. \u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eThe blade is forged from a mosaic Damascus that looks like flowers spinning in the wind.  The point is much more traditionally shaped, unlike the American tanto, with a sweeping swedge grind that gives the blade a peaked spine.  The handle scales are African Blackwood with domed fine silver pins.  The handle ends in a sort of rear-integral shape with Damascus integral bolsters and silver pins.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eThe sheath was another fun inspiration.  I have a friend who is really into bonsai and I recently made him a small grafting knife for his work.  As I was thinking about his American interpretation of bonsai, I decided to give it a go myself - as a bladesmith and sheath maker.  So I collected small branches from several different types of pine (even tried one from my Christmas tree) and finally settled on one from a small scrubby pine that had very short needles.  I trimmed the branches in true bonsai fashion and arranged it to flow with the shape of the sheath, and them pressed the branch into the leather - thus the end of the process defined the name for the whole piece.  \u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Burt Foster Handmade Bowie","description":"\u003cp align=\"left\"\u003eYou might think that I sit at a blank sheet of paper and create these ideas - these themes for the knives I make.  Most often, they come about about as the knife takes shape and only at the end do I connect all the dots.  This big, curvy Bowie has little thorns appearing in several different places.  The 2-bar firestorm pattern steel exhibits hundreds of little thorns at the edge, right down the center and at the spine of the blade.  The guard points are very thorny indeed, as a big cut on my right hand can attest.  And then the pine needles on the sheath, all point toward a very organic, plant-like undercurrent in this knife.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp align=\"left\"\u003eThe over 12\" long blade as I've said is a 2-bar Firestorm pattern of O-1 and 15N20 steels.  The guard is a 5-bar pattern of Turkish twist and straight patterns, set against a couple of polished nickel silver spacers.  The handle is some exceptional English walnut that I couldn't bring myself to pierce with a pin, so it was left without and finished in a high gloss to bring out all the wonderful flash in the wood.  \u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp speak.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp align=\"left\"\u003eThe Laminated blade of this knife is nearly 11\" long.  The guard is matte blackened carbon steel with a nickel silver spacer.  The handle is some of my spectacular spalted maple and there is a carved detail in the butt of the handle.  Balance is perfect for a knife like this, at about 2\" ahead of the guard.  Overall length is simple knife.  Complicating simple things is something I guess I do a lot - so says my wife.  \u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp align=\"left\"\u003eCLI's are Laminated but only the blade portion.  You can see in the third photo how the high-carbon core is only present in the blade, and leaves the tang comprised completely of 420 stainless.  After the laminating process the knives are forged to shape, just like integral knives forged from one piece of steel.  \u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp align=\"left\"\u003eThe handle is stabilized California Buckeye burl with six domed nickel silver pins.  \u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp align=\"left\"\u003eI think the sheath is in keeping with the rest of the knife as it is elegantly simple yet fairly complex.  It is simple in that it lacks any ornamentation or tooling, and yet it has a unique design that's not only for holding the knife secure, it shows off the knife's best feature - the laminated spine.  The knife rocks into the sheath from the side, and is held secure with the large pouch-style flap, leaving the spine exposed.  \u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp align=\"left\"\u003eThe blade is 5.5\" long with an overall length of about while to settle on, but in the end I love the way they look.  You see, one of the distinguishing features of the standard Combat #4 is there there are no straight lines anywhere on the knife.  All curves.  And yet when it comes to bolsters, the easiest thing to do is to at least make a straight line where the handle material meets the bolster material.  However in the drawings, it just looked wrong, so I made that a curve as well, and getting it to not only look right in drawings but to fit right on the knife was the challenge.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp align=\"left\"\u003eThe bolsters are hand-finished stainless or damascus mated to different stabilized hardwoods, ivories or horn, secured with domed nickel silver pins.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp align=\"left\"\u003eThe sheaths are the standard Combat #4 semi-pouch, but in a Dragonskin finish or plain finish (per individual knife).  If you don't mind me pointing out the obvious, a new Combat #4 Elite would make a very nice companion
